YOON YOUNG HYE
Eating Flower series that began since 2005 is the paintings that theatrically produced a flower place on a dish.
It has been searching for the change of various visual perspectives and the theatricalness of painting and the possibility
of making objet until now as of 2008.
My artworks shown through various exhibitions showed in metaphorical ways the
circumstance of concealing and beautifying the desires of humans as 'eating flower'. The intent at the time of starting
my work was rooted in the basic issue rather than the desire of human rooted in the overall social phenomenon. However,
I gradually started to think that it can be seen as symbolizing the overall image applied to all humans, and came to know
that it is the phenomenon found also at exhibition halls or art markets and the paintings are observed and evaluated according
to the intent and direction of one's desire. Although there were times in which my intent was well delivered when my paintings
were hung at exhibition halls or from the perspective of others, there were times in which they were received simply as aesthetically
pleasing, commercial paintings upon losing their pure purpose as they were interpreted in different ways. I fell into utter confusion
as someone who entered the art field at an early age since such circumstance coincided with the point of time in which art market
became revitalized.
My personal stories ended up appearing as unintentionally aligning with the appropriateness
of art market becoming an issue, and such circumstance that unfolded at the time in which I had yet to
construct the eyes for looking at society made me agonized over which stands to take as a painter.
It caused not insignificant amount of difficulties also in my work. I ended up obtaining much
information as I came in contact with various texts to solve different kinds of problems, and realizing
that there exists 'differences of acquirement' according to 'differences of perspectives' of individuals.
Accordingly, it became the opportunity for me to construct my subjectivity as a painter as well as a social
being living in society. Through this, it became the opportunity for me to proceed with my work in various
ways, and I happened to look back upon my artworks created and traces left behind during which I felt a
sense of futility and emptiness upon realizing that my artworks sold through art market disappeared to
somewhere as well as the currencies that were exchanged for them.
I became curious about whether or not my artworks created with much affections and hope that they will be
communicated with the public are being communicated as I intended upon being hung somewhere by someone upon
scattered through art market as well as about how they are being hung, the role of the artworks, the appearances
of the observers of them and the spaces.
Actually, it can be said that what I became curious about were the paintings, which were created through my hard
labors of creation, that were exchanged with currencies, which was the most convenient to exchange with, and sent
away for adoptions. Although exchanging them with money that will soon disappear made me uncomfortable, it was
the decision based upon the thought that appealed me that it is to advance and satisfy the painter, namely myself.
I wondered where and how my artworks that were sold in such way being shown and how they are viewed, regarded and
thought of by people.
I heard the news that my artworks that have been sold were mostly to different galleries, banks, hotels,
offices, auctions and individuals. What kind of meaningful roles the 'second life' of the artworks that
left the creator are playing?
I wanted to find and visit them and see for myself through my own eyes. I was able to see them except for the
ones sold to individuals by going to public building since most of my works were sold through galleries.
Among them, my artworks were included in the artworks BORAMAE Medical Center (operated by Seoul National
University Hospital) needed upon its new construction of a new annex according in accordance to Building Act.
Upon hearing the news, I visited the place and found my artworks being hung at 'orthopedics ward waiting hall'
and 'MRI, Department of Radiology waiting hall'. My feelings of gladness and amusement didn't last long, as
nobody at the hospital were looking at my artworks. They were simply gazing at the monitors and TV turned on
at the hall, and it was the result of having confirmed with my eyes that the reality is different from my natural
expectation that my artworks being hung at a hospital is to play the role of providing rest and strength even in
small ways to sick patients. It would not be an exaggeration to say that it was the result of art market.
I sought to mediate over the meanings of the spaces, people and scenery of circumstances reflected on the paintings
in the frames through the paintings. Although the subject that expressed the delicate emotions and sense of
skepticism mentioned above due to personal reasons will unfold, I believe it will be an opportunity to estimated
the role art plays in our lives and the accomplishments (?) achieved by the art mark that was active when looked
at it from a more macroscopic perspective.
The circumstance that occurs with the premise of hiding, showing or they are being 'shown'.
The images in my artwork are shown through the overlapping of the circumstances of the spaces being shown at the place my
artworks are hung. The original artworks are made to be hidden as the spaces being shown through glass frames cover the
images of the artworks. The glass that has the characteristics of projecting as well as reflecting plays the role of imaging
the politics of the market and product that is being opened while cutting off the communication between the artworks and the
public.
Like the products shown through the show window and outside scenery and the inside of a subway and its outside scenery, if the image
of flower on a dish is a symbolic metaphor, the appearance of the space being shown is simile. However, I seek to avoid direct
expression for the image in the space that is unclear and can barely be seen. Most people avoid the circumstances they are in and
the inside vividly being revealed. That has a thread of connection with the flower on a dish shown symbolically.
The scenery of the paintings silently taking on the role of simple decoration even though they are hung in a space of empty gallery
despite being hung at a gallery, hospital or office, the interior decorative purpose paintings for cafes or restaurant. Depending on
the location at which artworks are hung, the reason for purchasing the artwork and hanging at such location or the meaning and value
of existence as artwork can be detected. The scenery being reflected on the painting reflects the reality of the currency centeredness,
authority centeredness and obligatory business that determine the value of the artwork, and, at the same time, discover their lives,
namely, the desires hidden in the appearance of the lives of people including myself, and the glass that reflects the space observes
them in a cold way.

Eating Flower
