The paintings of Young Hye Yoon are linked to the important issue of modern art as they are closely
related to the self-reflective question on how the paintings are being consumed. In fact, the standing of
artworks today is being essentially reconsidered and redefined. Although paintings and sculptures were traditionally
considered as something unique through the point of time they were made/created, they are considered so through
the point of time of their consumption. A masterpiece is defined as something special not through the point of
time of unique act of 'creation' but rather through the point of time of consumption through unimaginable high
price. Art has become a part of consumption civilization in modern times that expands through, in specific,
consumption (instead of advancing through production and labor). Consumption is now not only the 'motive power
that moves society' but also the driving force of art (Jean Baudrillard). Look at the scene in which the time of
investment arrives and that of artists passes and the time of massive consumption manifests before our eyes and
the time of creation disappears!
It is clear that the attitude and point of view of Young Hye Yoon that respond to the modern situation are critical.
This is sufficiently revealed in his expanding and transcribing of the followings texts of an art critic onto her
canvas: “If we don't control the '(money) conversion fetish' that is roaming about like a ghost in the art field,
we'll have to experience real destitute state of art for a longer period of time in more serious way.”
Such texts became the opportunity for the painter to deeply thinking about and facing who are the artists in the
society such as that of the current, what they should be doing, to which world to rebel against and to belong.
However, the texts that came into the canvas amplifies the room for misread rather than faithfully delivering
the message of the original texts due to the many omissions and severance of the thread. To interfere with reading,
obstacles are placed 'intentionally' at places in the writing. Furthermore, the interpretive opportunities of the
observers inevitably have to be intervened as they are not able to know the conclusion of the overall texts.
In addition to this, the painter definitively dismantles the critical nuance of the texts themselves by coloring
each text with brilliant primary colors.
Paradoxically, the painter pleasantly takes off the critical nuance of the texts by intentionally expanding
the possibility of misread. The painter neutralizes the sharply edged criticism through a fancy feel. The painter
confesses that she does not want to definitely make the observers uncomfortable through her painting in spite
of her critical starting point. Is it a contraction? It could be. It is so from the sense that she is ultimately
a painter and the source of reason regresses once again to atelier. However, contraction has to be an inappropriate
concept for capturing the process and movement of pushing and pulling and the ups and downs of conflicts and
reconciliations since it is too classical and declarative. Instead, it would be much more appropriate to say
'dualistic' for understanding Young Hye Yoon. Although she expands her understanding to the after painting,
she is still on the extended line as she is still doing so through her paintings and through her introspection
of 'the painting as desire'. Namely, paintings to her are the mechanism of self-reflective knowledge that directs
the expansion of understanding as well as the projectile of the desire to be loved/recognized. Ultimately, her
paintings are an 'advancing' world in which the confrontation and coexistence of both parties from disparity of
the two, refutation and alignment and conflict and the resolution of conflict sensitively squirm within.
The paintings of Young Hye Yoon are the paintings that introspect paintings, in specific, the paintings that
contain criticism within as well as the misread that possess the scent of the original.
One fact can be mentioned at the current moment. It is that Young Hye Yoon is aware of the fact that the opponent
she should fight against through the expansion of understanding obtained through her paintings, if there should be
any, is not (the corrupt) world but paintings once again. This is a very important idea for the painter to discern
her future journey. It's because painters can go into the battler against the world only through their paintings,
and, at the same time, truly fight with paintings only when they open up themselves to the world.
-Excerption from Painting Theory of Hide-Show Painting or Dualistic Painting-
YOON YOUNG HYE
Modern society consists of an exchange system of symbols that consume symbols, and as a means of exchanging
‘money’, it loses its high value by the equivalence that can be applied to all things, all random things.
Artwork has also become a part of his trend as more and more objects seem to exist regardless of the exchange.
The value of an artwork has become a "product" of a special value that is valued more highly by originality,
or by one-off, rarity, and authenticity associated with creativity, which inevitably results in the paradox of
strengthening another materialistic element.
This consumption-oriented society was not aimed at consuming overflowing mass-produced goods, but rather at
consuming the desires of humans and society, as art works that were isolated and materialistic were exchanged
casually for products for the cultural phenomenon of everyday life.
The previous "Eating Flower" series reflects an era in which desires are consumed, while also presenting a flower
on which modern people live by hiding their desires. However, such subjects were seen as pretty paintings with a
wide range of commercial elements in the public and in the art market, and as a result, those that changed their
intentions were no longer enough to express skepticism.
Then, through the text. I also found that the situation in which writers and works are consumed is happening not
only to me, but also to a number of writers, and, furthermore, the world as a matter of public secrecy, constant
critical discourse on the political nature of the market is being formed. Among the articles that I shared, I read
about the art market (the absurd gap between aesthetic values and prices _art critic Shim Sang-yong and Kang
Soo-mi’s text, which was published in the July Seoul Art guide, 2007) and moved to the canvas myself. The close-up
image, not the entire text, was reproduced as an image of fragmented text, and it drew "letters" with its own brush.
Though the article discussed the emptiness of the work that is judged only as a product in a strong tone, some of
the writings that enter into the work amplifies the room for misreading, let alone replacing the contents of the
specialist. Furthermore, the context is so disconnected that it is hard to guess the whole story at all, but when
you read the writings in the works one by one, you have your own interpretation. It reflects the resultant situation
of the Eating Flower series, and symbolically shows the misunderstanding that occurs as the speech through the work
collides with reality.
The knowledge gained through text varies from person to person. It is accepted differently depending on the difference in perspective.
I have come to think about what the current society is, how it should be understood, what the writer should be, what he should be doing,
and what system he should be in. In a society that looks at different points of view, I have discovered a similarity in character through
‘difference in text acquisition’ in how I should look and speak.
The text in the work is the trace of ‘signifié ’ that are free to enrich themselves without resorting to any ultimate ‘signifiant’ and
provides a ‘field of free interpretation’. And inside the text, images of different layers are intertwined like cobwebs to create meaning
through cross-section and collisions. The text on the canvas was imaged with the context disconnected, and a combination of disconnected
but visible words set obstacles to the thought process of guessing the content of the text or trying to guess the content by giving a point
to a few letters. The context is fragmented, misleading, distorting, or concealing the contents of the entire text, resulting in the loss
of almost all semantic transmission. Rather than semantic transmission, it performs functions as an image (which look more like a picture
than a letter). This setting is difficult to understand the reality of the plain text, and only allows for the transfer of meaning by a
round or by-pass.
Instead of showing the handwriting as it is, "Slicetory" has transformed the text into a brush directly on canvas and into colorful text.
Rather than showing hard-text handwriting through print media, painting is also based on the characteristics of popular art. Paintings,
which can be easily traded in the art market, are understood and highly regarded as having the writer's soul in the process of producing
the work while praising the artist's handicraft labor. Especially the more time the labor force appears to be, the more realistic it is,
the higher the price it is traded prices. Although the nation's modern art still has a critical view of being understood by the public at
that level, it eventually decided that only by following such a format could it be communicated to the public and distributed conveniently
in the market, leading to the transfer of text to canvas through painting. On the one hand, it took a critical approach to the irrational
distribution of the nation's art market and to ridicule the public and writers.
However, after suffering a situation in which the work was buried by other colorful paintings because of its image-free writing, it became
an image covered with ‘sweet paintings’ that are popular in the art market. Through this, the work is increasingly transformed into"
product-like" works" and the "decorated text" is metaphorically revealing the reality of the art world through a more diluted and hidden
content.
Through 'Slicetory', I would like to show both this reality and the situation in which my comments collide.
