'The expansion of desire that is aroused by the painting that claims illusion is evidenced by action that the audience of the exhibition takes.
Thus, the painting is converted to an "objet" that has a "site-specific" characteristic.'
As the audience visits an exhibition and observes the artwork, he or she looks back on their life or makes judgements based on their personal
values. Whether they can cognize themselves or not, I am certain that the moment the audience sets foot into the room and when they leave the
room, they accept a new aspect of life that is "different from the previous one." An exhibition has a purpose of acting as a catalyst of making
a "change in life" for the audience.
An exhibition consists of three major elements; namely, the artwork, the place, and the audience. If even a single one of these element is missing
or is insufficient, it cannot be deemed a successful exhibition. Owners of exhibition rooms wish to communicate with the audience by presenting
exhibitions prepared with great artwork; artists hope to commune with the audience by presenting their work through a great exhibition room; the
audience is led to exhibition rooms in order to view exceptional artwork. Thus, the prerequisite for an exhibition is derived from the combination
of the desires that is based on the necessary and sufficient relationship between these three elements.
It is not enough to say that the distinct characteristics of an exhibition is dependent on the visual(illusionary) part. Likewise, in order to
lure the audience into the exhibition room by arousing a desire to "view" and making the audience act on such desire, the advertisement method of
the exhibition must also arrange an image that is more appealing.
I have planned this exhibition on the basis of appreciation of this fact.
The reason why the audience is led to the exhibition room is because of the luring by the desire to actually see the artwork for themselves.
The purpose of their visiting the place is because they want to fulfill something that they are searching.
Artwork that is considered appropriate for the place, tends to have a "site-specific" inclination. Although site-specific artwork is widely
perceived as work that is planned and presented outdoors and away from exhibition rooms, I dare wish to call the paintings that will be presented
at this exhibition "site-specific painting." Despite the fact that paintings can be easily hung upon any space, and can exist independently
regardless of the surrounding, the paintings of this exhibition possesses a meaning of existence that can only be given by the "space" where
the audience visits with a purpose in mind.
Nevertheless, the paintings in this exhibition do not play a role that is independent in itself to the configuration of the exhibition. Rather,
it is pushed out by the audience and the purpose of the artist. Even though the "trompe l'oeil" has a strong tendency to focus the visuals, it is
converted into an objet that plays an objective role of a painting that supports the presentation of the exhibition, not the other way around. Albeit
the painting is displaced from "artwork“ to "intention of the artist" and becomes a purpose, but at the same time it also plays the role as a
device of deception; thus, a means.
In this exhibition, the artwork that the audience will view, receives them as a "deception, trap, snare," as soon as they set foot in the
exhibition room. The existence is revealed as an image of a "door" - an iron gate that is easily seen in residential buildings such as apartments and
studio flats. The role of a door is not only to distinguish the "inside" from the "outside," but also to act as a pathway to move from one space to
another.
Exploiting the form and structure of an exhibition, the existence of the "door" allows the audience to broaden their perspective regarding the
relationship between the elements of the exhibition, i.e. artwork(purpose of the artist), place, and audience. Of course, this is not limited to
the "exhibition." The "door" is set in the pathway of widening the range of thought and changing the life philosophy of the audience, in every
condition and situation that they face in society.
Although the subject matter of "door" has appeared in previous illusion paintings and may seem banal, in this exhibition, it acts as a medium
for a possible movement in space by means of an effect of visual deception. Moreover, it plays the role of not only conveying the meaning that
is inherent in the internal image of the painting, but also the situation that is brought about because of its role as a objet of "door," thus
the extension of space (relation with the outside).
Display of Exhibition:
Upon entrance to the exhibition room, and a door can be seen in the front. When the audience approaches the door in order to head to the exhibition
room, it is soon revealed that it is an image of a door in the form of an illusion painting. Although they are momentarily stunned by their deception
by the device of illusion, their dumbfounded emotion is soon resolved upon a close inspection of the image of a door and with a burst of sour
laughter.
The points that should be noted here is the action that is brought about by both the "determination to act (desire)" and habit, and the part
where the audience experiences reality through a sliding to a perception of a phenomenon. (In other words, it is not the purpose of this
exhibition to convey meaning and context by means of an image implemented on a canvas, which is the norm in general painting exhibitions.)
The door that can be seen upon arriving downstairs, and the door next to it, and the door that is adjacent to that one, and so on, is a
repetition of the events that happened upstairs.
Although the doors gives a sense of walking down a corridor of an apartment or a studio flat, and even though the sense and perception of the
audience allows them to predict the upcoming results, it nevertheless makes them continue down the path with a sarcastic smile on their face,
regardless of them being let down by the fact that the door that they thought real is actually a false image. The repeated sliding of reality
makes the audience turn round and round the exhibition room by means of the "fake door" hung upon the exhibition wall, and creates an image of
a squirrel that cannot come down from a treadwheel.
The audience is coerced into acting even before coming to the exhibition room by means of "visual traps," and at the exhibition room they
get to experience the sliding through the artwork that they have come to see. Also, "visual traps" that are set up inside the room brings
about senses and action. Moreover, by making the audience experience sliding through their perception of the objective and methodical role
of the illusion painting, the exhibition enables the artist to present the purpose she intends to make through space (the result of the
objective of the audience).
The paintings that will greet the audience - who have arranged time to arrive at the exhibition - with inhospitality and absurdness is a
"closed door." A firmly closed door, a door that is opened to no corridor, an illusionary image that makes a door seem opened, etc, will
only provide a "wall" or a "closed pathway" to the audience who have come to the exhibition to obtain something. In reality, since it is a
sour deceptive painting, it opens no entrance or exit.
Although the audience will arrive at their destination (the exhibition room, contemporary art, an ideal place that they dream of in the
real world, or something that he or she desires, etc), they will truly arrive at their real destination only when they leave the exhibition
room that has presented to them the "unsearchable pathway."
