Biography
Hye-Yeon Choi was born in 1985 in Seoul, Korea and began playing the piano at the age of 5. After having started violin lessons as well, she joined to play in various youth orchestras as violinist since 7. As Hye-Yeon Choi completed the studies in Korea, she went on with her studies of „instumental and electroacoustic composition“ at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover with Oliver Schneller, Rebecca Saunders, Gordon Williamson and Joachim Heintz from 2009 until 2014.
During 2012-13, she was at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris(CNSMDP) for an exchange year in the class of Frédéric Durieux, learning about the 'nouvelles technologies' from Yan Maresz, Yann Geslin and Tom Mays. From 2015, her last course of studies are being continued with Marco Stroppa at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart. Her instrumental and electronic pieces were broadcasted by Deutschlandradio Wissen, Deutschlandfunk and are being performed at various Festivals in Korea, Germany, USA, south America, France and Japan in venues such as the State theater of Hanover, Munich, the ZKM(Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe), Donaueschinger Musiktage Festival Off-Program, Festival Aix-en-Provence with commission as residency composer and in New York City's Electroacoustic Festival (NYCEF) 2015, to name a few.
She is undertaking various projects with possibilities open for global commissions and collaborations with Ensemble Mosaik, Arditti Quartet, Ensemble Phorminx, Girard Quartet, Ensemble Schwerpunkt, Jessica Rona, Yako Quartet together. 2016, Hye-Yeon Choi was selected as a composer in residence from Lower Saxony ministery of Science and Cultur. Her vocal music “Das Himmlische Leben(2019)“ for SWR(Südwestrundfunk) Vokalensemble premiered and broadcasted by SWR Radio and TV in 2020.
1985년 서울에서 태어나고 유년시절을 충남 공주에서 보낸 작곡가 최 혜연은 숙명여자대학교에서 작곡을 공부했다.
학사 졸업 이후 2009년부터 2014년까지 독일 하노버 국립음대에서 기악 작곡과 함께 다양한 아이디어의 실현을 위해 전자음악 작곡을 전공하며 미니 오페라, 설치음악, 전자음악부터 퍼포먼스를 시도하며 예술적 영역을 넓히기 시작했다. 2012년에 프랑스로 건너가 ERASMUS 프로그램을 통해 파리 국립 고등음악원에서 또 다른 경험을 하며 음악적 색깔을 확고히 하게 되었다.
2017년 슈투트가르트 국립 음대에서 최고 연주자 과정을 마치고 유럽을 중심으로 작품활동을 하고 있다. 그녀의 작품들은 독일 라디오 방송국에 초연, 소개 되었고 한국을 비롯하여 프랑스, 네덜란드, 남미, 뉴욕, 일본 등지의 페스티발에 초청되어 연주되고 있다. 유머와 인간다움을 좋아하는 그녀는 사람에게서 음악적인 영감을 즐겨 찾는다. 그러면서 자연스럽게 인성 작품에 관심을 갖으며 집중하여 작업하기 시작했다. 2015년 Festival Aix-en-Provence에서 레지던시 작곡가로 선정되어 위촉 작품 “바리톤, 소프라노와 피아노를 위한 No Nonsense”을 초연하고 마스터 클래스를 열었다.
2016-17년 SWR(남독일 방송교향국) Vokalensemble의 장학생으로 올해 초 슈투트가르트 Kunstmuseum에서 위촉 작품 ”6명의 인성 앙상블을 위한 천상의 삶”을 초연하였고, 2020년 재연된 연주가 SWR 라디오와 티비를 통해 방영되었다. 자연스러우며 본원적인 소리를 찾는 그녀는 현재 때때로 우스꽝스러우며 아이러니하면서도 이해하기 어렵지 않은 음악적 색깔을 만들어내기 위한 작업들을 하고 있다.
