관조와 내적 시선

나는 그 작업에 오래도록 ‘관조(觀照)’라는 이름을 붙여왔다. 그것의 본질을 응시하려는 영혼의 시선이다. 사물의 유한한 세계를 넘어 추상적 본질에 가 닿으려는 내 소망을 표현한 것이다. 그런 점에서 관조는 사물에게 가 닿는 내 몸의 물리적 시선이 아니라, 내 안의 내면적 시선을 의미한다. 그 내적 시선이 가지 않는 곳에서 대상은 사물의 감옥으로부터 자유롭게 풀려나와 비로소 살아 있는 그 무엇이 된다. 존재의 내면의 체를 통해서 걸러진 시간과 정서가 버무려져 생명력 가득한 조형 의식으로 바뀌는 순간이 바로 그것이다. 물론 그때의 내적 시선은 나의 것이다. 내가 다 알 수 없는 우리 모두의 것이라고 생각한다. 살아난 대상이 나를 넘어 다른 우리에게 공통적인 그 무엇을 환기시키는 촉발점이 되기를 바라는 이유도 그 때문이다.

Contemplations has been the title of my works, which demonstrates my goal and intention as an artist over the past 30 years. It represents my ‘internal insight’ on the nature, and also the place where the traces of lives are mingled with the memories of more universal existences. The so-called ‘Korean identity’ as well as my own identity as an artist will come to light in the very place, for I can share the sentiment of “us” with every existence by the medium of my work of art.
