How are you doing, nowadays?
Answer, Sung ha lim
I think, in these days, time flies so fast. Is it said the time just flies as we grow older? I who paint pictures is otherly seems
to feel deep titillation a change of season, Anybody agree with you, every time over a year and changed season. May be according to
the season is your feeling is different from others.
I get inspiration from nature about artwork conception if I must keep intactly from painting nature on canvas. Because it is
aggregate of thinking and sensitivity which spread to thinking from imagination as that start of culture and art spread to
imagination from feeling. Everybody love basic beauty of nature because human is son of
nature and nature is its parents.
Human will be a part of nature forever. Spring which buds and blooms passed, Summer which miss the
rushing waters of the valley were over and we greet fall. It is said we become mature in life. We must be experienced the cold and
the heat and the flow of 4 seasons and become mature, are graven growth ring on forehead and we are given deep of thinking.
Now it looks beautiful snow flower trees cover the white snow. I spend time doing artwork conception with smell like winter come in
a crack in the window.

Could you please introduce yourself?

I have lively sense of gratitude to be born in country where is mountain and fields. I got many complaint about unusual artistic
sense from the cradle, worthless one clump of grass to the others stopped me cause of feeling the beauty and lifes.
It seems to be more sensitive about nature and life than the others.
That time I was so happy if I only had crayon and drawing papers. I develop artistic sense seeing the beauty and share with it.
Many kind of flowers in spring, the croaking of frogs in rice paddy in early summer, firefly's group dance in summer, embroidered
the milky way in the night sky, locusts in fall rice paddy, clean rapids water and the flying cloud all of them are my friends and
my dreams. I would want to inculcate love and beautiful dreams in many people through various colors of pictures which is expressed
my inner yearning and wait, dream and passion. Power of love is infinite.
Hwang Geumchan, poet, sang that furthermost way in universe was distance of heart you and me and again sang that so close yet far
way in this universe is distance of heart you and me.
I met the people in picture, reproduced the hometown, meditated on memories and newly created the world.
Possible element is the yearning and love and passion. I put the yearling, love and passion into the sun and want to convey to all
of people in the world.

Could you tell me about what you should do as artist?
Answer, Sung ha lim
I think that artistic activities or every branch of activities are my own admission and making self-portrait journey.
It is seen as artist express his inner world through various kinds of media, for example painter does colors, poet does poetry, musician does instrument or voice, dancer does own body.
First, it is important that a person find soon his ability since childhood. Our life could not go to two roads both.
I remember american poet, Robert Lee Frost "The Road Not Taken" read high school years.
"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood.......I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference."
We should step off on the right foot of a good life only one without remorse and ought to wise choice on two roads diverged.
Joseph Campbell, a mythologist, have suggested two kind of primary messages.
First, it is important choosing the thing that to do well and the thing that to feel worth. Second, it is experience to be alive and don't ask the concept of life. Our life are not the noun. The noun such as love, friendship, beauty are unsubstantiated.
We could love something, share friendship, see and experience the beauty. So life is seems to a verbal form.
In other words, the past is bypast the present and the future is just the present yet to come.
I can summarize three kinds of mental attitude for creating artwork.
First, only if artist has to be honest myself can be honest others. That could create it of true and deep artwork.
Second artist has sympathy about others and all of lifes. Others are not stranger but rather my mirror.
Other life is the foundations of my existence.
I think that it is created art which are sharing each other's feeling from love and mercy.
Third, it should be developed sharp sensibility.
In other words center pendulum about making my artwork is recovery of my emotion, sympathy and truth.

What artwork creation should do as artist?

I think the foundations of human and art is the nature. So I try my best to be close to the nature.
I love the nature, enjoy the thinking.
I feel happiness, reason of being alive in singing birds, blue sky and tremulous leaves and that I do remembrance music of nature
not artificial sound for example the babbling of a brook, scops owl sounds in summer night and the sound of geese in fall.
Also I imagine the sound of a horse's hoofs of galloping on grassland.
I embrace whole body sunshine. I like warm-hearted people just have one cup of coffee.
I sit front white canvas on an easel and paint brush right away put down and sit on sofa and close eyes quite a while, open eyes,
again and again........
I give appeal frankness's conception from my inner.

Could you tell me about mental thought and foundation of a lot of contemporary artists?
Answer, Sung ha lim
Artists of the present are confronted with confusing about their identity is seen as collision with various identity cause by
Ideological confusion which the last century bring to us and ceaseless exchange between civilization and civilization.
It is summarized that first, it is experimentation of a very large subject, composition and colors in the world of art and second,
it rediscover human that is separation between consciousness and unconsciousness.
Particularly discovery of in-depth unconsciousness have influenced the painting and there are Dadaism, surrealism and abstract
expressionism etc..
Third, it is setting of relation between human and nature.
If it biased the human become performance art and if it biased the nature become ecological art or the earth art.
In other words, there is pursuit of identity, the study of human, painting art in mental foundation of artists of the present and
there is introspection about meaning of nature.
A Sino-Korean word, the word '위기(危機)' is a combination of the word 'danger' and 'opportunity' which means crisis in english.
in other words danger is the opportunity.
Confusion of the world of art in the last century, look on the bright side, express diversity and find a way to endless novelty.

What should be changed it in the world of art?

In my opinion, the problems facing the world of art, the present. are divided into excessively high fence each territory and
consequently it is rare opportunity can absorb the new tide.
Also fall into mannerism in each territory or state of standstill and just keep the fixed form.
When new creative power and imaginative power are exhausted to be can do will is just to keep the fixed form.
The flowing water, does not rot. Stagnant water is bound to corrupt.
Only the water come into the lake, can not out where is called 'dead sea'.
The wind blow from window outside not inside. We should open the thinking window.
Sky is not fence. Sea is not boundary.
It is about time several territory in the world of the art must find the way to novelty along with.
Artist of globalization age knows no limits subject, subject matter and material, method.
The only thing that really matter is own a view of the world, imagination and creative power.

What is the way forward and history of root of the contemporary art?
Answer, Sung ha lim
We have been adversity and faced several problems in the last century. The 20th century, in a word, was mainly composed of
uniformity, patriarchal culture and exploitation of nature. After fighting two world wars and cold war era regional war is going on
in various places on the earth and environmental contamination is serious.
One part of this process, in the world of art, in the early 20th century there was two kinds of changes by Picasso and Matisse for
one thing is the method of seeing in other words revolution of composition by Picasso for another thing is revolution of colors by
Matisse.
Picasso said "I don't paint to see but do to think".
And consciousness & unconscious mind was discovered by Freud, in the world of art, appearanced dadaism & surrealism, many artists
showed painting our the unconscious part of the mind.
And in postwar period, there was "informel" which one of artistic tendency in France and was on the rise the abstract expressionism
which was advocated by Jackson Pollock in USA.
In a word, in the world of art, there was not one identity but was various experimental tide.
Now for the 21st century there is seen as being confused about one's identity because of excessive diversity, without formality and
the loss of meaning.
For the globalization age, there can raise a question where are the identity and range of korean painting and oriental painting?
Western painting is called in korea what is the identity of it?
Despite globalization age, what is the purpose of classification western painting, korean painting, oriental painting?
Is it the time to make new frame now? or is swept diversity and tide of freedom as now?
All-age have positive factors and negative factors. positive factors inherit from inheritance of the last century and must throw
negative factors away.
For the 21st century, we need to think once more about that for one thing should reestablish a relationship between human and nature
so appear these kind of environment art or ecological art and the earth art.
For another thing should rediscover human.
Human is composed with body and soul.
Erstwhile art focus excessively on body or remain superficial expression and I think the work fail to reach unconscious world or soul.
In other word, we should show art which proceed to consonance of body and heart and soul.

The beautiful love series 'You are My Sunshine~!'
Childhood, on my way home from school, I crouched down in the shade of zelkova tree beside a newly constructed road and drew on the
ground by broken a branch off a tree and the sun declined and bus came to me with layer of dust.
Flowers, trees, birds, faces, girl who wore a dainty dress, star, moon and sun.....
That were so beautiful pictures.
The thing which had love and warmness, hometown, glasses, trees and yearning.........
I kept the yearning have drawn works of conception during 20years maybe I didn't know that would want more honest from potential
passion in my own.
I would give promise the new tomorrow gather one seed with flowers of the season and passion together.
You are My Sunshine~
Motive for work about the sun in the beautiful love series is also because that to treat love as a part of life journey is so
regrettable being and truth of nobility value.
About the love, look back and reflect and we experienced and have to experience again. Long for being seen to beauty is desire of us.
So I could work for "the beautiful love series You are My Sunshine"
There is the wish for recovering of life by beautiful love which is warm always, happy, feel to thanks about every existence and
works as hope that all of them love.
At the scene of life, the more you are hard and exhausted the more have to believe power of love, beautiful power of love and that
might sublimate new life journey everyday and plant seeds in spring, drop sweat, weed a field in summer, harvest pleasantly in fall
and get work done mature of inner side.
You who our life under these the sun of four season is subject and material of my artworks are 'You are My Sunshine'.
Genre which express own ourself is various. Painter express using colors, poet express using poem, dancer express using own body.
Su Dong Po, Sung dynasty period, had seen the picture and poem of wangu who had been termed originator of literary paintings and had said "There is picture in poem and There is poem in picture.
In other words, The picture is poem which paint color, the poem is picture which write poem.

When do you paint artwork? and How do you make concept settlement?

Everyone should have plan but it is not hard-and-fast rule.
I have imagery that face my feeling and object in consciousness and unconsciousness.
For many days, fiddle around doing nothing in my workroom and unexpectedly paint the picture.
I have lost track of the time painting work.
Preoccupation liberate us from consciousness about times and space.
There are times that unutterable passion squirm in my heart.
We can paint orchid and an ume flower but we can't paint the fragrance of them.
Even it is very difficult expression of beautiful love, dream and energy of sun but I am very happy.

What do you would like to talk to modern artists ?

To say to modern artists is also to me.
I think now a social phenomenon is obsessed looks, possession and result as capitalism culture.
They don't put concern inner side and existence.
First we should be staunch the present and the process.
There is a thread of connections with don't dupe yourself.
No result not to process. Supposing we mount a challenge to the highest peak of Himalaya, if we are obsessed result, to mount the
highest pick we may miss the beautiful landscape on our way.
Combination of process is result. It is seen to must be new understanding process (now here) dearness of the present.
Second, do not imitate.
We must find our own style and creativity.
Existing artists and trend of art are not textbook but reference book.
Of course beginning artist need to imitate great artists but must find own sound, own express.
Third, Study deep and wide.
Most of artists are in the one valley and don't come out all their life.
Picasso had find endless subject, material and painting method so he was great thing.
Vast mountain have many valley and a long river have many stream and a big tree hang wide shadow so put tired passenger at rest.
We should be artists who could feel, thinking and reach enlightenment.

성화백님의 요즘 근황은 어떻게 지내고 계시는지요?

요즘들어 세월이 참 빠르다는 생각을 합니다. 나이가 들어감에 따라 시간에 대한 느낌이 빨라진다고 하지요? 계절이 바뀌고 한해가
지날 때마다 누구나 동감하는 부분이겠지만 그림을 그리는 저에게는 남다르게 계절의 변화를 더 깊게 느끼는 것 같습니다.
아마도 남보다 계절을 많이 탄다고나 할까요? 자연을 그대로 캔버스에 옮기지 않더라도 작품을 구상하는데 있어서 자연에서 많은
영감을 얻게 되지요. 문화와 예술의 출발은 느낌에서 상상력으로, 상상력에서 생각으로 전이되는 감성과 생각의 종합이기 때문이겠지요.
자연의 원초적 아름다움을 사랑하지 않는 사람은 없을 것입니다.
인간은 자연의 자녀이고 자연은 인간의 부모이기 때문이지요. 인간은 언제까지나 자연의 부분일 것입니다.
새싹이 돋고 꽃이 피는 봄을 지나 더위와 갈증, 계곡 물소리가 그리운 여름을 넘어 그리고 평온한 가을을 맞습니다.
우리들이 인생에 철이 든다고 하지요. 사계절의 흐름과 추위와 더위를 겪어야 인생이 철이 들고 이마에 나이테가 새겨지면서
생각의 깊이가 주어지겠지요.
지금은 하얗게 덮인 눈꽃 나무가 아름다워 보입니다. 창문 틈으로 들어오는 겨울 내음과 함께 화실에서 작품구상을 하며 지내고 있습니다

저는 들이 있고 산이 있는 농촌에서 태어난 것에 감사한 마음이 듭니다. 아주 어린 꼬마 시절부터 예술 감각이 남다르다는 칭찬을 많이
받아 왔습니다. 다른 이들에게는 아무것도 아닌 풀 한 포기에서도 생명과 아름다움을 느껴 발걸음을 멈추곤 하였지요.
자연과 생명에 대한 감수성이 남들보다 더 예민했던 것 같습니다.
그 때는 크레파스와 종이만 있으면 너무 행복했습니다. 어릴 때부터 자연의 아름다움을 보고 함께 하면서 저의 예술적 감각을 더
키워온 것 같습니다.
봄의 온갖 꽃들과 초여름에 논에서 우는 개구리 소리들과 여름날의 반딧불이의 군무와 쏟아질 듯이 하늘에 수놓아진 은하수와 가을
논의 메뚜기들과 맑은 여울물과 무심히 흘러가는 뭉게구름들은 저의 친구이자 꿈이었지요.
무엇 때문에 그림을 그린다기 보다 저의 내면의 그리움과 기다림과 꿈과 열정을 그림의 다양한 색채의 향연을 통해 많은 사람들에게
사랑과 아름다운 꿈을 심어주고 싶었습니다. 사랑의 힘은 무한합니다.
황금찬 시인은 이<우주에서 가장 먼 길은 너와 나의 마음의 거리이다>라고 노래하였는데 이것을 바꿔 노래하면 이 우주에서 가장 멀고도
가까운 길은 너와 나의 마음의 거리인지도 모르지요.
저는 그림 속에서 사람을 만나고 고향을 재현하고 추억을 되새기고 세계를 새롭게 만들어 봅니다.
그 그림을 가능하게 만드는 요소가 그리움과 사랑과 열정이겠지요.
그 그리움과 사랑과 열정을 태양에 담아 온 세상 모든 사람들에게 전해 주고 싶습니다.

화가로서 임해야 할 자세는 어떻게 해야 할지 말씀해 주세요

저는 예술이나 모든 분야의 우리들의 활동이 자신의 고백이자 자화상을 만드는 여정이라고 보여집니다.
예술가는 여러 매체를 통해 화가는 색채로, 시인은 시로, 음악가는 악기나 목소리로, 무용가는 몸으로 자신의 내면세계를
표현해 내는 것이라고 봅니다.
우선 어려서부터 자신의 소질을 일찍 발견하는 것이 중요하다고 봅니다. 우리의 인생은 두 길을 갈 수 있는 것이 아니니까요.
고등학교 시절 국어 책에 나왔던 미국의 시인 로버트 프로스트의 <가지 않은 길>이라는 시가 떠오르는군요.
<노란 숲 속에 두 갈래길이 있었느니라..... 내가 한 길을 택하였으므로 모든 것이 달라졌노라>는 구절입니다.
우리들이 후회없이 한 번 뿐인 인생을 살아가려면 첫 단추를 잘 잠궈야 하고 두 갈래 길에서 현명한 선택을 해야겠지요. 미국의
신화학자 조셉 켐벨 선생은 80세가 넘어서 대담한 책에서 인생의 주요한 두 가지 교훈을 제시하고 있더군요.
첫번째는 자신의 지복(자신이 잘 할 수 있고 보람을 느낄 수 있는 일)을 선택하는 것이고 두 번째는 삶의 개념을 묻지 말고 살아
있음의 경험을 하라는 것입니다. 우리의 삶은 명사형이 아닙니다. 사랑이나 우정이나 아름다움 같은 명사는 실체나 내용이 없습니다.
사랑을 해야 하고 우정을 나눠야 하고 아름다움을 보고 체험해야 합니다. 그래서 삶은 동사형이라고 보여집니다. 우리들은 과거도
아니고 미래도 아닌 지금 여기의 현재에 충실해야 한다고 봅니다.
다시 말하자면 과거는 가버린 현재이고 미래는 오지 않은 현재일 뿐이지요.
저는 작품에 임하는 자세를 세 가지로 정리해 보고 싶습니다.
첫째는 자기 자신에게 진실해야 한다고 봅니다. 내 자신에게 진실해야 타인에게도 진실하고 거기서 참되고 깊이 있는 작품이 나오는
것이지요.
두번째는 타인과 모든 생명에 대해 연민을 가져야 한다고 봅니다. 타인은 남이 아닌 나의 거울입니다. 다른 생명은 나의 존재의
뿌리이기도 합니다. 사랑과 자비에서 생명의 교감이 있는 예술이 나온다고 보여 집니다.
세번째로는 감수성을 예민하게 키워야 한다고 봅니다. 느낌,감성이 무디어지면 일상의 지루한 반복과 형식의 연장만이 있을 뿐 창조와
상상력은 고갈되고 말 것입니다.
다시 말하자면 진실과 연민과 감성의 회복이 저의 작품에 임하는 중심추라고 볼 수 있습니다.

작품 창작은 어떠한 자세로 임해야 할까요?

저는 인간과 예술의 뿌리는 자연이라고 봅니다. 그래서 되도록 자연과 많이 가까워지고자 노력합니다. 자연을 사랑합니다.

현대 화가들의 난립된 정신적 사고와 기틀을 어떻게 보고 계시는지 말씀해 주세요

현대 화가들이 직면한 정체성의 혼란은 지난 세기가 가져다 준 이념의 혼란과 문명과 문명의 부단 교류로 인한 다양한 가치관의 충돌에
요인이 있다고 보여집니다.
그것을 정리해 보자면 첫째로 미술계 내에서 구도와 색채라는 큰 주제의 실험이고 두 번째는 인간의 재발견인데 그것은 의식과
무의식의 구분이고 특히 심층무의식의 발견은 미술에 큰 영향을 주었는데 다다이즘과 초현실주의와 추상표현주의가 그런 조류라고 보여
집니다. 세번째는 인간과 자연의 관계설정인데 여기에서 인간에 치중하면 행위예술이 되고 자연에 치중하면 생태미술이나 대지미술이
됩니다.
다시 말하자면 현대 화가들의 정신의 기저에는 미술이라는 정체성 모색이 있고 인간의 탐구가 있고 자연의 의미에 대한 성찰이 깔려
있다고 볼 수 있습니다.
우리들이 위기(危機)라는 한자어를 쓰는데 이것은 위험과 기회라는 단어의 합성어라고 합니다. 위험이 곧 기회라는 뜻이겠지요.
지난 세기의 미술계의 혼란은 긍정적으로 보자면 다양성의 표현이고 끝없는 새로움의 모색이라고 볼 수도 있을 것입니다.

각 화단들의 개선해야 할 부분은 어떠한 것들이 있는지요?

제가 보기에 현재 한국의 화단이 직면해 있는 문제점은 각각의 영역이 지나치게 높은 울타리로 나누어져 있고 그런 결과 다른 영역들의
새로운 조류를 흡수할 기회가 적다는 것입니다. 각자의 영역에서도 매너리즘에 빠져 있거나 답보 상태이고 고정된 형식의 고수가
두드러진다는 점입니다.
새로운 창조력과 상상력이 고갈될 때 의지할 것은 형식의 고수밖에 무었이 있을까요?
흐르는 물은 썩지 않습니다. 고여 있는 물은 흐리고 썩게 됩니다. 물이 들어오기만 하고 나가지 않는 바다를 사해라고 하지요.
바람은 밖에서 불어오지 안에서 불지 않습니다. 생각의 창문을 열어야 합니다. 집에 창문도 닫아만 두면 방안 공기가 탁해집니다.
하늘에는 울타리가 없습니다. 바다에도 경계가 없지요. 이제 화단의 여러 영역에서도 문을 열고 대화하면서 함께 새로움을 모색해야 할
때입니다.
지구촌 시대의 화가는 주제와 소재, 재료와 방법에 한계가 없습니다.
단지 문제되는 것이 자신의 세계관과 상상력과 창의력일 뿐입니다.
지구촌에 사는 모든 이들에게 느낌과 생각과 깨달음을 주는 깊고 넓은 그림을 지향해야 할 것입니다.

현대미술의 뿌리의 연혁과 나가야 할 방향은 무엇인지요?

우리는 지난 20세기를 여러 문제들과 직면하면서 격동 속에서 보냈습니다.
20세기는 한마디로 획일성과 가부장적인 남성문화와 자연에 대한 착취가 주류를 이루어 왔다고 보여 집니다.
두 번의 세계전쟁과 이후의 미.소의 냉전시대를 거친 다음에도 세계 곳곳에서 국지적인 전쟁이 계속되고 있고 환경의 오염은
심각해지고 있습니다.
이런 과정에서 미술의 세계를 보면 20세기 초 피카소와 마티스에 의해 두 가지의 변화가 왔는데 하나는 피카소에 의해 우리들이 보는 법
즉 구도의 변혁이 있었고 마티스에 의해 색채의 변혁이 있었다는 점입니다.
피카소는 말하길 <나는 보는 것을 그리는 것이 아니라 생각하는 것을 그린다>고 하였지요.
그리고 프로이트의 의식과 무의식의 세계가 발견되자 미술계에서는 다다이즘과 초현실주의가 우리들의 일상의 의식이 아닌 무의식의
세계를 그림으로 보여주기도 했습니다.
그리고 전후에는 프랑스에서는 굳은 형식주의를 벗어난 앵포르맬 운동이 있었고 미국에서는 잭슨 프록이 주창한
추상표현주의(액션페인팅)가 대두되기도 하였습니다.
한마디로 미술에서 보자면 20세기는 하나의 정체성이 아니라 다양한 실험적 조류가 있었다는 점입니다.
이제 21세기를 맞이해서 미술계는 지나친 다양성과 무형식과 의미의 상실 때문에 정체성의 혼란을 겪고 있다고 보여집니다.
우선 지구촌 시대를 맞아 한국화나 동양화의 정체성과 범위는 어디인가 하는 질문을 제기할 수가 있을 것입니다.
한국에서 서양화라고 하는데 그것의 정체성은 또 무엇일까요?
순간마다 온 지구촌으로 정보가 흐르는 지구마을 시대에 서양화, 동양화, 한국화를 구분하는 목적은 무엇일까요?
지금 우리는 새로운 틀을 만들어야 하는 시점일까요? 아니면 지금처럼 다양성과 자유의 조류에 계속 휩쓸려 가야 하는 걸까요?
모든 시대는 긍정과 부정의 요소를 안고 있다고 봅니다. 지난 세기의 유산에서 긍정적인 점을 계승하고 부정적인 점은 과감하게 가치를
쳐 내야겠지요.
21세기를 맞아 다시금 헤아려 볼 점은 첫째로는 인간과 자연의 관계를 재설정해야 한다고 봅니다.
그래서 요새 환경미술이나 생태미술, 대지미술과 같은 모색들이 있습니다.
두번째로는 인간의 재발견을 해야 한다는 점입니다.
사람은 몸과 마음과 얼(영혼)로 이루어져 있습니다.
지금까지의 예술은 지나치게 몸에 치중하거나 피상적인 표현에 머무르고 있고 무의식의 세계도 심층무의식인 얼(영혼)에는 이르지
못했다고 보여집니다.
다시 말하자면 몸과 마음과 영혼의 일치를 지향한 예술을 보여주어야 할 것입니다.

어린 시절 하교 길, 신작로 느티나무 그늘에 쪼그리고 앉아 꺾어든 나뭇가지로 그림을 그리다 보면 해는 많이 기울고 뿌연 먼지를 잔뜩
달고 버스가 달려 왔답니다.
꽃, 나무, 새, 얼굴, 예쁜 옷을 입은 소녀, 별과 달 그리고 태양,,,뿌연 먼지 속에서도 너무 아름답게만 보이는 그림들이었지요.
사랑과 정겨움이 묻어나는 것들 고향, 풀, 나무들 그리고 그리움들,,,그 그리움을 안은 채 20여 년간 구상 작품을 그리면서 어쩌면 내
자신 안에 잠재되어 있는 열정에 더 솔직하고 싶었는지도 모릅니다.
계절로 피는 꽃과 정열을 하나의 씨알에 모두어 또 다른 내일을 약속하고 싶었지요.

아름다운 사랑 시리즈 태양을 작품화하게 된 동기도 우리들의 바쁜 삶 속에서 사랑이 생의 여정 중 일부라고만 치부하기에는 너무
안타까운 존재이고 존귀한 가치의 실체이기 때문입니다.
이 사랑에 대하여 뒤돌아보고, 되새겨 보는 가운데 우리가 경험했고 또 경험해야 할 사랑이 아름답게만 비쳐지길 염원하는 것이 우리
모두의 바램이기에 이 고결한 염원을 담아 "아름다운 사랑 시리즈 You are My Sunshine"을 작업하게 되었지요.

작품을 그리시는 시기와 배경은 어떻게 설정이 되는지요?

화가가 어느때 어떤 그림을 그리겠다 하고 그림을 그리는 것은 아닙니다. 저의 느낌과 대상이 만나 의식과 무의식 속에서 자라서
나오게 되면 형상화 시키키는 것이지요. 몇 날 며칠 한 참을 작업실에서 앉았다 섰다 음악을 듣고 놀다가도 어떤 예고도 없이 붓을
들기도 하지요. 붓을 들고 작품을 그리다 보면 정말 시간 가는 줄 모릅니다. 우리들이 깊이 어떤 일에 몰두하다 보면 시간과 공간에
대한 의식에서 해방이 되는 경우가 종종 있지요. 뭐라 표현할 수 없는 열정이 가슴에서 꿈틀 거릴때가 있습니다. 우리들이 난초와
매화꽃을 그릴 수는 있어도 난초와 매화의 향기는 그릴 수가 없답니다. 아름다운 사랑을, 꿈을, 태양의 에너지를 한 폭의 그림으로
표현하는 것이 어렵지만 너무 행복하기도 하답니다. 그러나 아직도 못다 그린 그림, 나의 열정 과 사랑과 에너지들은 그릴 수 없는
난초와 매화의 향기처럼 그리운 이의 속 마음처럼 아마도 이생을 다할 때 까지도 표현할 수 없겠지요.

여기서 현대 화가들에게 주는 말은 저 자신에게 주는 말이라고 해야 옳을 것 같군요. 저는 지금의 자본주의 문화가 지나치게 보여지는
외모와 소유와 결과에 집착하고 있다고 보여집니다.
내면과 존재에 대해 관심을 두지 않고 있지요. 첫 번째는 과정,현재에 충실해야 한다고 봅니다. 자신을 속이지 말라는 말과
일맥상통하지요. 과정이 없는 목표,결과가 어디 있을까요? 우리들이 히말라야의 최고봉에 도전한다고 가정해 보면
정상에 오르는 결과에만 집착하면 오르는 과정에 있는 여러 산들의 아름다운 초목들과 산새들과 발 아래 무심히 흐르는 구름들의
아름다움은 놓치고 말 것입니다.
과정의 결합이 결과입니다.과정,<지금 여기> 현재의 소중함을 재인식해야 된다고 보여집니다.
두 번째로 알아야 할 점은 모방을 하지 말고 자신만의 개성과 독창성을 찾아야 한다고 봅니다.
기존의 작가나 미술사조는 참고서이지 교과서가 아닙니다. 물론 초기에는 대가의 것을 참고할 필요가 있지만 그것을 넘어서서 제소리
즉 자기표현을 찾아야 할 것입니다.
세 번째로 깊고 넓게 공부해야 된다고 봅니다. 대부분의 작가들이 하나의 골짜기에 갇혀서 평생 나오지를 않고 있습니다.
피카소가 위대한 것은 끝없이 주제와 소재와 기법에 대해 새로운 모색을 했다는 점이지요. 흐르는 물은 항상 새로운 법이지요.
흐르는 물이 피곤하다고 쉬지는 않습니다. 큰 산은 여러 골짜기를 거느리고 큰 강은 여러 시내를 받아 들이고 큰 나무는 넓은 그늘을
드리워 더위에 지친 나그네를 쉬게 해 주지요.느끼고 생각하고 깨달음에 이르는 작가가 되어야 하지 않을까요.
