After slicing the empty top into 12,000 slices, I collected and applied barcodes from commercial products easily obtained in
daily life upto completion. While floor plane with diamonds upside down means grief, solemnity, and silence for economic recession,
floor plane with diamonds upright means merriment, liltingness, gabbling for booming economy. Putting the sky line of Manhattan,
New York at the rear of empty top and revolving the top, I carved it.
As we see inserted hyphen in the title, English word Merry-go-round- riding equipment that goes round with merriment, interesting,
liltingness, gabbling, Barcode-Go-Round(Barcodes go round) was taken from it as symbolizing it. Also there is Mr.Galileo Galilei's
'The Earth goes round'
For printing out in large size after I divided the whole images into 5 parts horizontally, and 5 parts vertically, rendered them,
I combined them in one by hard working process. As gradation in the background was done well it has the taste of Ukiyo-e. As season is
in itself, we can feel the gorgeous taste of May to a climax. It has to be a riot of colors. For my personal tastes I like to use
strong tone of black and white but there are people who like gorgeous colors. Anyway making the most of modifiability I made it reverse
atmosphere at 180 degrees. The work's atmosphere is different entirely from solemnity, graveness, grief of "Mourning Becoming Barcodes"
that I previously presented. The title of this work was taken from Greek tragedy "Mourning Becoming Electra" (As a daughter of Agamemnon
and Clytemnestra she revenged her father by instigating her elder brother to kill her mother and mother's paramour.). These works are
good examples that show clearly how modifiability is powerful. Because in fact these works are originally one work. This is a pretext for Mr.
Walter Benjamin to lose consciousness.
I made it in the size of 2 x 4m but with the limitation of equipment capability all of three works were printed out on canvas cloth
in 1.3x2.6m and covered 3 walls of the exhibition booth(ㄷ shape) all over by them. This is the affair that there were at the 7th Ansan
International Art Fair(AIAF) Ansan Arts Center, Ansan, south Korea from May 1 to May 6 in 2010.
Printing out in 2x4m can be done in the future when printing equipment and technical skills are reinforced and amplified.
Printing out on the canvas cloth, if so, is this a textile print !!! For all the printing materials computography can be transformed and
combined.
Instead of an address, a record of prints made in a form was put in a transparent polyethylene envelope, attached on the surface of
computograph and sewed with a needle after writing contents If not, also there is a way that a record of print's contents and work's
images together will be printed out and only a signature will be rendered apart after printing out in order that we can see it at a look
due to a huge size of print.
속이 빈 팽이를 12,000개의 slice로 만들고 일상생활에서 쉽게 얻을 수 있는 상품들의 바코드를 수집하여 그대로 다 찰 때까지 입힙니다. 바닥은 다이아몬드를 뒤집은 것은 고통, 번민, 슬픔을 나타냈고,
바른것은 즐거움, 재잘거림, 경쾌함 등을 나타냅니다. 뉴욕 만하탄의 스카이 라인을 뒤에 대고 팽이를 돌려가며 조각하여 나타내었습니다. 화사한것은 바코드가 잘 돌아가 경기가 활성화되는 것을, 음울한 것은 불경기를
나타내고자 하였습니다.
제목을 보면 하이픈이 들어가 있습니다. 영어단어 Merry-go-round 회전목마-즐겁고 재밌고, 가볍고 들뜬 마음으로 돌아가는 저 놀이기구-이를 상징하듯 “바코드는 돈다 Barcords-go-round”를
회전목마에서 따왔습니다. 또 갈릴레이 갈릴레오의 “지구는 돈다 (The Earth goes round)”도 있습니다.
대형으로 출력하기 위해서 화면을 가로 5, 세로 5, 25쪽으로 분할하여 Rendering하고 다시 합성하여 어려운 작업과정을 거쳐 탄생한 작품입니다. 배경이 Gradation이 아주 잘되어서 우키요에浮世繪
맛이 납니다. 철도 철인지라 5월의 화사한 맛을 한껏 느낄 수 있답니다. 오채반란 五彩斑爛이라 해야겠지요. 제 개인적으로는 흑백의 강한 톤을 쓰길 좋아하나 화사한 색채를 좋아하는 분들도 계시더군요.
하여튼 수정 가능성을 최대한 적용하여 180도 분위기 반전한 작품입니다. 먼저 발표한 "Mourning Becoming Barcodes" 상복이 어울리는 바코드의 장중, 엄숙, 침울과는 작품 분위기가 전혀 다릅니다.
이 작품제목은 고대 그리스의 비극 “Mourning Becoming Electra (Agamemnon 과 Clytemnestra 의 딸로서 그의 오빠 Orestes를 선동하여 어머니와 그 정부 情夫를 죽여 아버지의
원수를 갚았음) 상복喪服이 어울리는 일렉트라” 에서 따온 것입니다. 이것들이 바로 컴퓨터의 수정가능성이 얼마나 막강한지를 여실히 보여주는 본보기입니다. 왜냐하면 이들 작품은 사실 한 작품입니다.
발터벤야민 (Walter Benjamen 기념비적인 글 “기술복제시대의 예술작품”의 저자)이 혼절할 노릇입니다.
