About my ‘internal insight'

Song, Soo Ryun

The idea of my drawing always starts from observing the nature. This observation is not just focused on the nature being presented before my eyes; the nature belongs to me, and at the same time belongs to numerous individuals existing throughout the past and future. Seen through the eyes of those people, the nature reveals its true essence by the collective unconscious residing express this sentiment-the object under my gaze and the memory associated with it-on my drawing.

The work of art is not simply the realistic portrayal of the material world. Just as a beam of plain sunlight passing through a prism is altered into diferent colors, I try to portray the image which is refracted through the unconscious meomory and projected onto the inner world. I strive to capture the sentiment arisen from the object of observation, not the object itself. A specific scent brings back the memories about a certain moment of live. Likewise my drawing will hoefully awaken the history and universe buried inside each one of us, thus help each person to grab a piece of truth. I dream of the world where complex and multi-layered truth exists, beyond the material world. Through my drawing, I wish to create the realm where various existences come to life, free of the visible world.

Contemplations has been the title of my works, which demonstrates my goal and intention as an artist over the past 30 years. It represents my ‘internal insight’ on the nature, and also the place where the traces of lives are mingled with the memories of more universal existences. The so-called ‘Korean identity’ as well as my own identity as an artist will come to light in the very place, for I can share the sentiment of “us” with every existence by the medium of my work of art.

I use indian ink and color on Korean traditional paper, in a way to explore the identity of ‘us’ through the sentiment dissolved in oure collective unconscious. Utilizing both of the “bae-chae” and “baek-bal” techniques is intended to arouse the emotion related to the images in my drawings. [The “bae-chae, 배채(背彩)” technique is to paint colors on the back of paper several times, and the “baek-al, 白拔” is to put glue or egg white on certain area so that the applied area would remain uncolored and white.] I employ soft earth and powdered calcite normally used in mural painting. Therefore our sentiment can be diffused widely without and limit of space and time. Our ‘internal insight’ has a capacity to integrate individuals as a whole.
