Untitled. oil on canvas. 60 x 50cm. 1984

On Shin Moon-Young’s Art Exhibition

Art Historian, LEE IL

Once Michel Lagon, French art critic, had created the new term Abstract landscape painting, this term, mixed with two contradictory words, seems to us a little strange and inconsistent. But it is by no means inconsistent at all and gives us instead some kind of familiarity.

Landscape painting is of course realistic and descriptive painting. However, landscape without realistic and graphic description can also be called landscape painting. In this case the Nature is integrated into the painting as a source, and the painter regards the Nature as a source and material of his inspiration. So the concrete landscape of the nature disappeared in his canvas and the abstract form of the nature set forth. This is the Abstract landscape painting.

Shin, Moon-Yong's art belongs to this. His works are usually the seascapes, describing the surging waves. It is natural for him to draw the sea because his native place was seashore and he might have many contacts with the sea. But here the point is how he looks the ordinary and routine sea differently from others.

The waves, one of natural phenomenon, have various features and appearances. Shin Moon-Yong's sea is nevertheless not the ever-changing features of the waves, but the imaged waves tranquillized from the contemplation. That is, the imaged and abstracted waves without winds, saltiness or sound of waves.

In this case the Nature has already lost its substantiality as object. In his pictures there is no depth of the sea, no bulk of the sea, or in other word no substantiality or entity. Only it the light-filled canvas itself. And when we gaze at the canvas, we may be unaware led to his world of transparent illusion.

The fact that Shin, Moon-Yong's native place was seashore has not so much connection with the fact that his paintings are seascapes. What is important to him is, how to shape and describe that Nature. And this leads to the problem of the relation between the Nature and the Paintings. According to Rene Wuyghe, it is the problem between the Nature as a starting point of the painting and the Art as an end point. In short, it is the problem of the method.

Shin, Moon-Yong starts from the Nature and makes the nature abstract. So his seas become the boundless ocean of abstraction and his waves, the infinite rhythmic movements. The trace or the memory of the nature remains in his canvas, but it changes into the wholly different entity, or the artistic entity.
To emphasize this artistic entity, he divides his canvas into several sides irregularly of sometimes regularly. Or he sometimes sectioned it like squares and sometimes the figures of the cross appeared to form the waves.

The geometrical signs or the forms of the square like these told us the transference from the image to the complete plane delineation are that gives his paintings the characteristics of the conceptual. Yet his paintings are not the expressions of the concept, rather, they overcome the elements of the conceptual. What touches us is the pure emotional world of his tinted with the delicate colors and lights.

The sea, nature and its color

Cho, Eun-jung / The history of art-Mokpo university

The art of professor Moon-yong Shin which has been preceded for the past 40 years can be condensed into one word 'sea scenery', Through carefully observing his artworks within 70's to early 80', it could be known that this artist started his artwork from the composition of abstract-expressionism which the monochromatic stroke cuts across his canvas with an oblique line, but the subject matter he steadily pursues is the wave on sea surface in spite of various ongoing-changes of the modeling. Professor Shin looked back upon that once he stated himself "I'm going to end this style of painting within 3 to 4 years" at the time when (the artist of February) exhibition held at the National Contemporary Art Museum in 1989.
Differently to his anticipation, the wave is still giving him an inspiration of in-depth quest for such subject. Through observing the development process after the middle 80s comparing to his early works filled with gentle waves on the canvas and piled a checkerboard graduations, a doorframe shape or nude of a woman above it, 'the sea' for the scenery possesses the core position in the world of prof. Shin's artwork as it goes into his latter works of appearing a sky and a background of cloud as important composition factors on the canvas by gradually introducing the horizon. It seems such fact communicates with his pursuit of plasticity from the early artwork not just simple reproducing concrete scenery.

Waves and sea - from a plastic factor to scenery

20 years ago, prof. Shin had already classified his own Wave series artworks into 3 periods. At the first period in early 80's, he drew a wave only by using the character of it, then at the second period in late 80's, he introduced the horizon and started to separate the world into upper and lower part on canvas, and finally the third period is still proceeding, which has been started since his private exhibition at the Art and Literature Promotion Center in 1989. One that performs function worthily within such development process is the horizon, and it takes a role of changing the waves in early works which is equally covered with concrete plastic factors, into the scenery of sea going far away.
The spacious sky depiction spread on the horizon with the water image which is endlessly fluctuating, shows that the artist becomes to be interested in the natural phenomena and original principal of its background. Prof. Shin's comment that factors on the upper and lower parts of canvas, which are opposed to each other suddenly a new gate through an antagonistic process by the axis of horizon, can be defined of such aspect. Once again referring to his comment, he means "I made an upper part of artwork smaller compared to the lower one, so it could stimulate a spectator's imagination to spread out their expanding imaginative power on the upper parts above the horizon instead of showing everything on canvas."
It could be said somewhat paradoxical situation that the latter works, which reproduce the wavy shape, endow a spectator with a free scope of imagination comparing the early abstract works which create elaborately controlled shading effect on canvas touched with crossing stroke in oblique or right-angle direction maintaining the lozenge or quadrangle frame, in other hand, such fact expresses what prof. Shin ultimately pursuits in his sea scenery. Because the wave and billow on canvas is a result and evidence of his artistic act of painting and scrapping repeatedly, and it is positioned on the boundary of concreteness and abstraction. His solo exhibition (From Sea to Cloud), at Mokpo MBC Broadcasting hall in 2003, shown a new change in his art work reproducing the upper part above the horizon which leaves implication and imaginative scope into a cloudy shape floating reely, expanding on the whole space of canvas, but similarly to the wave story, it is also considered as his continuous effort to comprise the nature on canvas through the color and brushing.

Scenery and nature, the inheritance of oriental tradition

The modeling the nature and its origin through the landscape can be said one tradition of oriental art. And in the history of Western art, it is a contrastive part to the fact that the landscape has been developing with concrete interest in a human society and life. According to the change of world aspect from the God centered to the human after the era of Renaissance, the observation and analysis about the nature occasion has got out of only delivering the transcend image or abstract massage, and is now concentrated on depicting the present age which possesses the particular space and time like 'now', 'here' in the artistic field. There was such factor positioned on the background of a flourish of both the landscape and the genre in Northern Italy and Northern part of Europe society centering on the Venice between 16th and 17th century. On the other hand, in the tradition of oriental art, the landscape has been developing in direction pursuing the ultimate goals to the reproduction of nature and mental training. Especially such analysis of Confucius about the character of water represents the figure of nature which the landscape artist pursues to express. "Generally, the water seeming as not doing anything though it raises all creatures on earth, it looks like having the goodness, the water seeming as being so faithful to the reasonable of nature no matter how it flows whether straight or windingly, it looks like having the righteousness, and its in-depth bottomlessness seems like the truth." No matter whether to use the quote of Confucius or not, the awe in oriental tradition to the enormous subject called Nature, is clearly melt in the character of landscape genre. There is another reason able to occur in the traditional landscape of the object from prof. Shin's wave series artworks and his abstract painting was embodied in the images of cloud and billow. Differently to the seascape of the Netherlands baroque period like the artwork of Jan Vermeer which express realistically a concrete scenery of the particular area like Antwerp or Delft, his sea shows even universal and abstract world not limited in the peculiar area or period. The waves composed of scrapped marks on canvas coated with various tones of colors like a bluish green, a soft blue, violet and gray, reminds of hourly changing shape of sea, but such sea on canvas can be limited in the offing of Mokpo, the East Sea or the Pacific Ocean. It's rather reasonable to regard it as the spacious water itself of in-depth bottomlessness, embracing of other creatures and for itself, being the origin of nature as Confucius Quoted.

Composition through the color

The basic composition factor in prof. Shin's artwork is the color. Similarly to impressionism artist who uses the color to grasp the light effect reflecting hourly on the surface of object, he pursues autonomic making the balance of power and harmony through the process which various color are collided and piled with each other. And it has something in common with the abstract expressionism artist's pursuit of artistic autonomy; it's connected to the intuitional expression over a simple realism-technique which depicts faithfully the exterior of object or the painting composition by artist's calculation and interest. His artwork pursuing repeated scrapped painting on canvas several times with soft-tone colors rather close to monochrome, or continuous attempt of simple composition considered of the horizon looks even the mechanical, it's the effort trying to get out of the conscious and calculated composition like automatism painting technique of the surrealist. His master's degree treatise of graduate school at Hong-ik University in 1977 analyzed Fernand Leger the latter cubism artist is one example shows his continuous pursuit for the color. In Leger's, who strongly influenced from Cezanne, process analysis developing the individual artwork for the mechanical in the pursuit of the cubism of its spatial character, the color is regarded as the prime clue. Such description about Leger's artwork, in 1919 below, tells that he early had in-depth interest in the problem how the particular character of the color intersects with each other when those are altogether mixed on the canvas; "Leger's artwork, is his first work able to have a life force and the in-depth without the contrast of shade. The primal color like blue, red and yellow, flows out from this drawing. Now the color very freely escapes, and it itself sufficiently has own expression. It gets its own total-new activity from the object." As if one recollects a fact that the sea itself as a subject matter prof. Shin has steadily deal with for the past few decades, and it's the mobile and formless (abstract) existence which refuses the fixed shape and adhered analysis, one can understand his aspect and work-style to express through a moderate fashion only with the minute change of the color instead of the constitutional analysis and the line composition on canvas going ahead. Especially by observing the latter marks which never let the straight and oblique line intersect except the waves of the horizon, he seems pursuing the inaction in nature compared to his early artworks once he attempted to control over the canvas with a doorknob, window-frame, straight or horizontal graduations. In this manner, his story of sea scenery, waves and cloud can be said the reproduction of the power implied in nature and the real nature instead of the concrete depiction of realistic object itself. And the color and brushing in such process, takes a role of a medium delivering actively the artist's individual emotion to a spectator. The rough or brushing and the smooth or dynamic scrapped marks bring out elaborate waves and shape of billow, on the other hand, it shows a spectator a free development and expression reached to the abstract stage escaping from object's own color and exterior.
