BLUE MOON,130x130cm,oil on canvas,2017

Lotus(連) rose. All alone.

Arttist Moon Seoung Joon

Lotus came. As the moon rises, as you come.
The world always comes closer and suddenly becomes life. So as the picture. As the picture of Nam Sang Woon came closer to me, the artist might have felt same for the lotus. Yet not everything becomes art, just like not everything that we cross becomes life. Because life is a whole of facts, not the total of things. Many would have gone through the world of the artist, most of them slipping away, when some parts left traces. As always, some traces become wounds leaving scars or even something that helps the scars to heal. And probably the lotus was somewhere in between. And the artist is someone who makes something into nothing.

Lotus
The relationship between meaning and meaningless don’t only apply to the artist. Whichever it is, humans don’t have an ability to draw something that is meaningless. However, because of this incompetence, world can be filled with meanings; full of “facts” not “things.” It is called the “material” in painting. For the artist, Nam Sang Woon, the lotus means the world filled with facts. Lotus probably permeated into his life in a sudden and developed. No one realizes the name of the place where lotus sets, except the artist himself. Or as for the most artists, even the artist himself might not know what it is. Yet, we could at least see the figure of lotus sitting, and through this we could see a glimpse of the painting, the artist’s world of fact. Letting the picture to be little more generous, giving us clues, these are the “expression” of the picture. And when “expression” meets “material”, mentioned earlier, it becomes an art.

Now, let’s look at the figure of lotus. The canvas is fully filled with one blue lotus leaf, but generally lotus don’t bloom alone. They bloom together, entangled and relying on each other as if they are trying to overcome the soil of the puddle. However when they bloom, they don’t only change themselves, they also change their world, the puddle, into a pond. However, the artist’s lotus is alone like a full moon. How will it stand this loneliness? We are pushed into this loneliness and permeate to someone, yet the artist is the opposite. He pushes and pushes the loneliness until it fills the world. His art reminds that this artist is that kind of a person. I’m not trying to make a flashy comments such as being an art or him being the artist. I’m saying that despite of his profession, a person named Nam Sang Woon tried to stay as ‘I’ instead of ‘us’, maybe he can only live that way. And those who are simple minded can only express their existence in an anachronistic way such as art. Thus, the artist’s lotus that does not make a pond and does not try to change the world. It tries to stay as it is.
This can be seen on water drop on a lotus leaf as well. Water drop does not penetrate into it’s world, the lotus leaf. Obviously it is because it can no longer be a water drop once it penetrates into the lotus leaf. To remain as a water drop, it has to stay and stand alone. Also, the water drop is lonelier it gets clearer. This is the only way of existence of the water drop. Interestingly, the lotus leaf stays as a world for the water drop to be a water drop. Like our fathers, and the artist who became a father. Lotus becomes a world to the water drop. As how mankind has lived, lotus is a father and the artist himself.

Blue
However, it is not easy to withstand without penetrating into the world. We cannot stay as us, if we don't build ourselves up firmly. This takes time, and patience, and therefore attachment is inevitable. If one does not have an attachment to life and self, it is impossible from the start. The artist’s painting is a work that is completed like a ruin, stacked up in layers, as if the attachment was piled up like a stratum, overcoming time. So it is inappropriate to call his work hyper-realism, which is a completed part of the moment. His work is rather a picture of dyes spreading on cloth, as life dyes itself like water. This piece is completed over a long period of time like life needs time to form to become a life. Therefore, it also takes a long time to se through this picture. Just like long enough time is needed for one person to become oneself.

However, as I have mentioned before, withstanding for long is difficult. And maybe that is why little blues had pervaded into the artist’s time. The lotus is filled with as much blues as the fullness of itself. This was also shown in his previous studio art. He stuffed the backside of the film set, the emptiness, with gloomy blue color. The emptiness and the gloominess of the blue screen of the studio before it's filled with gorgeous graphics. The lotus is replacing the illusion in this work. The lotus, like a full moon, is reminding the melancholy like the oldest blue screen. However, we can’t live without moon, not in a physical meaning. We cannot live without the imaginary-story the moon provides. A human being needs illusion even when they know it's imagination. Just like a lover wanting to hear how she is loved, even though she knows those words cannot convey real love. This kind of excistence, which might be the original sin of man, brings up a blue moon in his picture. And he searches for his presence under that moon.

Where would his search go in the future?
His picture will get somewhere like the blue light expanding it's body on canvas with just one color.
Just like the point becomes the line, and the line becomes the side.

Image - symbol with absence and without meaning

Cho Kwang-Suk (Art critic, Gyeonggi University)

Modern people are addicted to the notion of image, so they eagerly try to penetrate the reality based on forming all objects to image. Let alone the visual media such as movie, television, from the extravagant electric lighting board which grabs the attention of the crowd, the computer monitor on the table and to the mobile phone as their part of the body, innumerable images disseminated by diverse media make us feel the gigantic force in our contemporary society, because these images explain the reality, make new values and seems to be alive. However, the objects felt from images are rather non-alive, not alive, and ideal concept with unreality, not reality.
In modern society, the status of society does not only have its financial value, but also it contains its own energy which can be compared to organisms. Like this, the images which have massive force and influence enable us to rethink about what we consume.
Many people seems to be just enjoy this image, rather than in negative perspective. Nam Sang-Woon, in his works, tries to find for different views, rather than the positive sides of the image. Nam Sang-Woon draw lotus leaf. The lotus leaf fills the screen or space as it symbolizes the world we live in and it is the combination of two different dimensions; reality and fiction. It visualizes the difference existing between the lotus leaf and water drops which does not permeates to the leaf and crumpled like a bead. Also, the landscape of shadow faintly permeated on the other side of the leaf reflects the reality.
The water drop or lady bug on the lotus leaf is described as a delicate subject, so it seems very small and tender like modern people standing on a gigantic city. The low curve that the veins of lotus leaf makes does not seem crucial to the spectator, however it is enormous mountain ranges to the ladybug. It seems to describe the psychological status of modern people shrinking on their existence in unboundedly large world.

Recently, the artist expressed the scene which peeked the look of set studios on the back of the movie filming sites. It does not articulate the image that we tend to imagine as realistic, live and fancy video like inside the movie. It is rather a poor and shabby. The rear part of the filming site or the building only in its front dimension, even the loose base blocks seem so slack. The screen scenes in the movie depict this place more strongly than real sites. However, this set studio is like a fake and fictional site without any reality. The artist juxtapose the dimensions of solid colors as blue, yellow, and orange like next to the image. It is the blank margin which can be always substituted with another filling. For the usual chromakey filming which uses the blue space as a background, the artist juxtaposed it right next to the set studio. This margin is the device which connects the reality and fiction, and it generates the composure for another imagination to intervene. The technique which compounds other images to the blue backgrounds after filming seems to express "the movie is a created image".
The chromakey technique is related to the convenience and technology of the movie production. The ambiguity between the fiction and real world, and the impossibility of distinction between th original and image were the main topics of television dramas or movie, but it is also the structure of technological expression which reconstitute the indirect experiences to direct reflections. In the modern society described as the world of information and image, we are filled in fake objects like chromakey. Then, for modern people, movies formulate the utopian image which can be realizable. People attracted to the overflowing images, are stimulated with the greed to consume. The medium which disseminates and stimulates this greed is the video image. The image spread by media turns the unexistence into existing object. The modern consumer does not consume the physical usefulness of the product. Rather he consumes the image of how he consume the designs on exterior of the object, labels and brands attached to product, and purchase of the product. The video image does express the object into a shape, but also it reformulates its meaning, providing the place to consume with new imagination. Image has become the reality, rather than to express that reality. This reality, as described in Simulation by Jean Baudrillard, make us sink into the futility. In modern society, image is rather a unreality than reality, so it is more likely to be similar to the concept itself which possesses the meaning, information or symbols. It is a mere fantasy without any existence. Like modern people who fear the unexistence of image, the status of image cannot be compared to the past. The image which was a only a fantasy or illumination started to influence the reality. The image, not reflecting the existence and even over the society and existence of the relationships between the images, has become the new concept. This is rather a notion called "Simulation" as 'symbol which conceals its hollow existence' in the newly auto-replicating society (Baudrillard, in Simulation).
The view of Nam Sang-Woon glancing at movie filming site is rather intentionally awkward. It is very different from the movie scene that we are accustomed with. It fully explains the criticisms towards the sites of fiction that is rarely disclosed in movie, let alone its void reality.
