Lee hoyoung was born quiet countryside in Icheon, Kyeongki-do in 5th April 1961.
His father have produced celadon porcelain and lacquer porcelain, naturally he got access to porcelain and was absorbed
in painting after entrance to the school.
He said tugged at the heartstrings when he sometimes miss his dead father because the memory of his early days that his
father stoke a pottery kiln, after it cools he slept with his father in pottery kiln.
When he was 19 years old he spent difficult time. At that time he began wandering over throwing the endless question
himself about “what is painting? what is life?”
One day after 5~6 years when he came back home from school Buddhist monk, Junggwang was making the pottery in his
father's workshop.
He helped Junggwang making pottery and ran errands. From that time he has officially began making porcelain. During a
few years he made celadon & buncheong porcelain.
After that he was thrown into confusion "What is this?" "Why do I make pottery the same as pottery of others?" he began
throwing question himself.
From early childhood he has disliked it the same as others, for instance if someone worn the same as his cloths he never
wear the cloths.
Therefore it was too hard his disappointment and grieves.
Several times he gave up a job.
After that he challenged that make small plane porcelain not normal ceramic ware.
From early childhood he has made new porcelain because he has been seek something to be different from others.
First time he made plane porcelain (200 x 170mm) and it put an extension to each other with his older brother Lee
Daeyoung who manages a "chosunyo" (Porcelain Company) and painting artist Lee Hangseong.
Now this artwork of 5200 x 4800mm is exhibiting in KBIZ hall since 1985.
In 1987 the newspaper (ilgan sports) printed the story and other artists were inspired and worked pictorial porcelain.
This effort of Lee hoyoung has a very high historical and artistic value.
Celadon and Buncheong plane porcelain 800 x 2150mm/ A patent application.
That is mainly produce 300 x 400mm and sometimes produce 400 x700mm but have many problems for commodification.In case
of China and Japan, plane porcelain is made of white porcelain but it is made of the special clay and need very high
temperature.
So it is entirely different quality from general porcelain. Celadon and Buncheong plane porcelain 800 x 2150mm is only
practicable by Lee Hoyoung.

exterior materials, furniture and interior decoration because the plane porcelain size become large.
The porcelain is expressed in new color and pattern which are harmony with uyak(glaze) and fire in kiln that artist is
exchanged between delight and despair at moment.
The color is appeared in 1300 degree C in kiln. It is not expressed in general color stuff so it need a divine blessing.
Now he does his best for creation new color of jinsa color.
He wants to teaching the younger generation that it is passible to make a porcelain of great size.
Definitely, he should be do it.
When he exhibited Great size plane porcelain in japan they extremely excited it.
While I take down the tea cup on celadon lotus pattern plane porcelain table I am penetrated with emotion. If his
forerunners are place here they are worthy of the highest admiration.
Icheon where is the famous porcelain spot is to him that there was a place of his father's life as well as the origin of
porcelain genetic from old days.
It is the season of wonder when does he open his the kiln? and which color of his sculpture?
1961년 4월 5일 이호영은 경기도 이천 한적한 시골에서 태어났다.
청자 도자기와 칠기 도자기를 만드는 아버지를 따라 자연스레 도자기를 접하게 된 그는
아버지의 영향 때문인지 학교에 다니기 시작하면서 그림 그리기를 열심히 했다고 한다.
가끔 돌아가신 아버지를 그리워할 때면 가마 불을 때고 나서 식어진 가마 속에서 아버지와 잠을 자던 행복하고 평온한
기억이 추억으로 떠올라 그리움에 가슴이 찡 하다는 말을 하곤 했다.
19세 되던 해에 그림과 인생이 무엇인가 라는 끝없는 자문에 방황은 시작되었고 정말 힘든 시기를 보냈다고 한다. 5, 6년이
지난 어느 날 집에 돌아와 보니 중광 스님이 아버지 작업장에서 도자기를 만들고 계셨단다.
옆에서 심부름도 하고 중광 스님을 도와드리며 본격적으로 도자기 작업을 하게 되고, 몇 년 동안 청자와 분청 항아리 작업을
한다.
그러다 “이게 뭐지?” “남들이 다하는 항아리를 내가 왜 따라 하고 있는 것인가”하는 고민에 빠지게 된다.
어렸을 적부터 남과 같은 것을 무척 싫어했던 예로 학교에서 누가 같은 옷을 입고 학교에 오면 그 옷을 다시는 안 입을
정도였으니 그의 상심과 낙담이 짐작이 된다.
새로울 것 없는 도자기를 만들며 몇 번이고 그만 두려 했단다.
그러다가 그릇이 아닌 편편하게 펼친 작은 평면 도자기 작업을 시작하는 새로운 도전이 시작된다.
어릴 적부터 남과 다른 것을 추구하는 태생적인 저항으로 남과 다른 도자기를 만들었고
서양화가 이항성을 도와 형님이신 ‘조선요’를 운영하는 이대영과 함께 작업한 200 x 170mm로 평면화된 도자기가 하나하나
붙여져 5200 x 4800mm 크기의 화면으로 1985년 작업한 작품이 여의도 중소기업 회관에 걸려있다.
1987년 일간스포츠에서 기사화 할 만큼 당시에는 그릇을 만드는 도기를 평면화한 작업이 큰 반향을 불러 이후에 다른
작가들도 평면 작업에 도자기를 이용해 회화적인 풍부한 맛을 더하는 초석을 마련한 이호영의 노력은 사적으로 귀한 가치가
있음을 분명하게 짚고 싶다.
작은 평면으로 시작된 도자기가 20 여 년 동안의 실험과 시행착오를 반복한 결과 세계 유례없는 또 ‘최초’라는 타이틀을
붙이게 되는 특허를 내기에 이른다.
기존 사이즈에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 300 x 400mm평면 도자기는 이제는 생산이 쉽고, 가끔 400*700mm가 만들어지고는 있으나
상품화되기는 어려운 현실에서 그는 800*2150mm 대형 사이즈의 평면 도자기를 구현하게 된 것이다.
일본과 중국에서는 백자로 크게 제작되었으나 특수소지로 만들어지고 있어 소성 온도가 높아 일반 도자기 질과는 전혀 다른
질감이라 분청과 청자로 만들 수 없는 아쉬움이 있다.
그가 만들어낸 청자 분청 평면 도자기 800*2150mm의 특허는 타일이나 블록 사이즈처럼 이어 붙인 작업이 아닌 마치 화선지
전지에 그림을 그리듯 대형 작업을 도자기에 구현해낼 수 있다.
작가에겐 창작 의욕을 고양 시킬 만한 충분한 근거가 될 뿐 아니라 그가 처음 만들었던 평면 도자기의 사이즈가 대형이 됨에
따라 작게는 화면으로, 크게는 건축 외장으로서의 재료로, 또한 가구뿐 아니라 인테리어 소재로 다양하게 이용될 그의
노력의 결실이 어떤 추이를 보여줄지 장인의 손과 마인드를 갖춘 그의 결과물은 유약을 매개로 그가 창조할 조형을 즐기면
되는 일만 남은 듯하다.
도자기는 유약과 불의 조화로 가마에서 나올 때 구현되는 새로운 색과 무늬가 작가에게는 기쁨과 절망이 오가는 순간이라고
한다. 1300도 불 속에서 뜨거움을 견디며 만들어지는 색은 혼합재료로는 낼 수 없는 색인데다가 신의 한 방울 은총 또한
간절한 작업이다.
독특한 진사 빛깔을 뽑아내는데 그는 열심이다.
또한 실험하고 있는 독특한 그만의 컬러를 위해 오늘도 만들고 실험하며 자신의 우주를 태워버린다.
도자기가 이렇게 대형으로 만들어질 수 있음을 그는 대대로 후배들에게 알려주고 싶다고 한다. 또한 그래야 할 것이다.
액자에 넣어 일본 전시로 선을 보였을 때 그들은 열광했다. 그가 만든 청자 연문 평면 도자기 테이블 위에 찻잔을
내려놓으며 나는 옛 선인들이 이 자리에 계셨다면 찬탄을 금치 못했을 거란 확신을 하며 가슴이 벅찼다.
도자기의 고장 이천이라고 하는 그의 배경은 아버지의 터전이기도 하고 피로 이어져 내려오는 숨길 수 없는 유전자가 있다.
옆집 오라버니 같은 그의 수더분함 속에 매의 눈 같은 날카로움과 영민함을 본다.
언제 그의 가마가 열릴까, 어떤 컬러로 그의 조형의 창작물이 태어날지 막힘 없는 그의 행보가 자못 궁금해지는 가을이다.
