Men had experienced military life in the 80's everybody may know about Pechka.
Pechka is a term for fireplace which is made of brick masonry in russia and means
conventional heating method in the barracks where live soldiers in military.
I had sent winter as heating soldier so-called 'padang' during military life.
I putted mixing coal powder with water into fireplace morning and evening twice per day, took charge it for 7months per
year, two years.
It easily can be imagined relations of black lead due to live over the half as 'padang' in military life.
That present, when I had touched the black lead as 'padang' I was backbreaking and boring but remained also different
the memory.
Black lead storage is the wholly black space same as the dark.
It was ironic when I entered there disappeared passion of young man in my 20s and that there was strange comfortable
place the same as mildness and stability.
I did often think black lead as the other property of matter not black lead as heating material and when I did mix black
lead with water and did make lump of marshiness I did often think this image was the same like that potter mixed the
clay and sculptor touched the mud.
I have started with that time memories work of black lead in 2004 gradually have been organizing through various
experiments.
I did understand material characteristic that was multipurpose depending on density difference that mixed black lead
with water and bond in the process of preparation of last year exhibition and this exhibition.
So I did only plane work in the interim was connected to relievo and could develop into three-dimensional structure.
Black lead which is mineral did reveal unsuspected nature by external stimulus.
It did show each different luster depending on rubbing substance of each different material. That is say monotonous of
solid color overcome and serve as a momentum to find more various and deep changes.
It is not change that sense of subject and structure of a story, I have wanted to be showed. But these days, It changed
little more that express method of material side using black lead.
This exhibition also revealed existence problems of human that is self-alienation, depression, apprehension and agony
etc through human's body.
Finally the subject "black muk' means that is hopeless bridle of despair we should carry shoulder. To be hard bring down
us in endless silence and where an indefinite future will lead us we can not know that.
You might think subject is somewhat heavy and pessimistic but through this exhibition I want to tell about that frankly
express life style of us and image through this, societal concern and love are brought up, I believe could cure little
by little scratch of our life
80년대 군대 생활을 해본 남자들은 누구나 페치카(Pechka)에 대해 알 것이다. 페치카는 러시아의 벽돌조적으로 된 벽난로를
이르는 말로 군대에서는 장병들이 생활하는 내무반의 재래식 난방 방식을 의미하였다. 나는 군대시절 난방병 일명
‘빼당’으로 겨울을 보냈다.
아침저녁으로 하루에 2번 탄가루를 개어 아궁이에 넣었는데, 이를 한해에 7개월씩 2년 동안 담당하였다. 군생활의 절반
이상을 ‘빼당’으로 생활하였다면 흑연과의 인연을 쉽게 상상 할 수 있을 것이다.
그 당시 ‘빼당’으로 흑연을 만지면서 지겨움과 힘든 점도 많았지만 또 다른 기억들도 남아있다. 분탄창고는 온통 새까만
암흑과 같은 공간이었다. 아이러니하게도 이곳을 들어설 때면 20대 청년의 격정은 사라지고 포근함과 안정감과 같은 묘한
편안함이 이곳에 있었다. 난방을 위해 물과 흑연을 적당히 배합하여 질벅한 덩어리를 만들고 있노라면 도공이 흙 반죽을
개는 모습이나, 조각가가 흙을 주무르는 모습들을 떠올리며 난방재료로써 흑연이 아닌 또 다른 물성으로서의 흑연을
생각하곤 했었다.
그때의 기억들과 함께 2004년에 시작된 흑연작업은 여러 가지 실험을 통해 조금씩 체계를 잡아가는 중이다. 지난해 전시와
이번 전시를 준비하는 과정에서 흑연, 아교, 물을 배합하는 농도의 차이에 따라 다양해지는 재료적 특성을 이해하게
되었다. 이리하여 그동안 평면에만 그쳤던 작업이 부조로 이어질 수 있었고, 나아가 입체로 까지 발전할 수 있었다.
광물질인 흑연은 외부의 자극에 의해 예상치 못한 특성도 들어냈다. 어떤 물질로 표면을 문지르느냐에 따라 각기 다른
광택을 보여주었다. 이는 흑연이 지니는 단색의 단조로움을 극복하고 좀 더 다양하고 깊이 있는 변화를 찾을 수 있는
계기가 되었다.
지금까지의 작업을 통해 내가 보여 주고자 했던 주제의식이나 이야기 구조는 변함이 없다. 다만 근자에 흑연을 다루면서
재료적 측면에서 표현 방법에 약간의 변화가 생겼을 뿐이다. 이번 전시 또한 기존에 꾸준히 다뤄왔던 소외와 우울, 불안,
고뇌 등 인간의 실존적 문제를 인체를 통해 드러내고 있다. 인간으로 살아가면서 무수한 경험과 현상 속에 겪게 되는 삶의
질곡을 어둡고 묵시적인 이야기로 풀어내려는 것이다.
결국 명제 ‘흑묵’은 우리들이 짊어지고 가야하는 희망이 없는 절망의 굴레를 의미한다. 힘겨움은 끝없는 침묵 속으로
우리를 떨어뜨리고 막연한 미래는 우리를 어디로 이끌지 알 수가 없다. 삶은 견딜 수 없는 무거움의 연속이며 지속적으로
우리들이 안고 살아가면서 풀어야할 숙제 일지도 모른다.
주제가 다소 무겁고 염세적으로 전달될지 모른다는 우려도 든다. 그러나 궁극적으로 이번 전시를 통해 이야기 하고자 하는
바는 개인적으로 느끼는 우리의 삶의 방식과 모습을 여과 없이 표현함으로써, 이를 통해 제기된 사회적 관심과 사랑이
우리네 삶의 생채기를 조금씩 치유할 수 있으리라는 점이다.
